Today, 44 years ago…

Forty-two years ago, the recording industry sold people a format to replace one they already owned. It worked better than anyone expected — and then it did the same thing to the industry.

The pitch

The compact disc arrived with a slogan its makers came to regret: Perfect Sound Forever. No hiss, no crackle, no wear.

Neither claim was quite true. Early CDs sounded thin to ears trained on vinyl, and discs pressed in the 1980s suffered oxidation that ate the aluminium layer inward from the edge. But the pitch didn't need to be true. It needed to be a reason to buy your record collection a second time, and hundreds of millions of people did.

The part the industry didn't see

The CD's commercial strength was that it was digital. That was also its undoing.

Music encoded as numbers copies without loss. Once computers had CD drives and the internet had bandwidth, it copied to anyone. The industry spent two decades persuading the world that music should be digital, then spent the next two discovering what digital meant.

The most profitable period in recorded music history led directly into its collapse, using the same technology for both.

What it changed

The album survived as a physical object for a final twenty years. Then the format that made the industry rich made it optional — and music became something you access rather than something you own.
