The Film Nobody Filmed

Text-to-video can produce short clips of striking quality.

By Legacy Domination

Where it is. Text-to-video can produce short clips of striking quality. Consistency across shots — the same character, same lighting, same room from another angle — is the central unsolved problem, and a film needs thousands of shots that agree with each other. Short films made largely with generated footage have screened at festivals; they run a few minutes, and that consistency limit is exactly why.

What's already in production use. Less visible and more significant: de-ageing, background replacement, crowd generation, and dubbing that matches lip movement are standard in major productions. The industry has used synthesis for years. What's new is that the tools are cheap enough for anyone.

The labour question. Central to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, which secured the first substantive protections of their kind — consent and compensation requirements for digital replicas, limits on AI-generated writing credit. Those agreements cover one industry in one country and expire. What replaces them is unsettled.

Honest odds. A feature made predominantly with generated footage by 2031: plausible, and probably a novelty before it's a norm. Generated content as an ordinary part of pipelines: already happened.

What it would change. The cost floor of visual storytelling. A film currently requires a crew, locations and money — which means someone has to approve it. Remove that gate and you get an enormous volume of work, most of it poor, some from people who could never previously have made anything. That's the pattern of every prior cost reduction: home video, digital cameras, editing software. Each was predicted to destroy cinema and instead expanded who could make it. Whether this one differs in kind rather than degree is the open question.
