The Song With No Author
Generated tracks appear on streaming platforms in volume.
What's happened. Generated tracks appear on streaming platforms in volume. A song using cloned vocals of two well-known artists went widely viral in 2023 and was removed after label objections — it was, by most accounts, good. Composition tools are now routine in production for backing tracks, stems and library music. The market for functional music — advertising, background, stock — was affected first and hardest, because it values suitability over authorship.
The legal position. Copyright offices in several jurisdictions have held that purely machine-generated work can't be copyrighted, since authorship requires a human. Work with substantial human input can be. Where the line falls is being litigated, as is whether training on copyrighted recordings is permitted — the larger question, and one that reaches well beyond music.
What it can and can't do. It produces competent work in an established style, which covers a great deal of commercial music and is genuinely useful. What it hasn't demonstrated is the thing that makes music matter — the sense that a specific person meant something specific. Whether that's a technical limitation or a category error is exactly the argument.
Honest odds. Generated music as a large share of functional audio: underway. A generated work earning genuine critical acclaim: possible, and it would immediately produce an argument about whether the acclaim survives knowing.
What it would change. Music has always been evidence a person was there — a recording is a trace of someone's decisions. If that trace can be simulated, the question becomes what listeners were attached to. The honest answer is that it probably varies enormously by listener and by genre.
