Today, 17 years ago…
Seventeen years ago today, a gang landed a stolen helicopter on the roof of a cash depot in Stockholm, smashed through a skylight, and left with the money before police could reach the building.
Why the police couldn't come
The gang had put a bag marked as a bomb outside the police helicopter hangar. Not a real one — but the hangar had to be evacuated and cleared, and by the time it was, the operation was finished.
They had also scattered caltrops across the access roads to the depot, puncturing the tyres of any vehicle attempting to approach.
The whole thing took about twenty minutes.
What made it work
Not the helicopter, which was the theatrical part. What made it work was that they had thought about the response rather than the target — mapping the routes, the response times, the single point of failure in the police air unit, and disabling each in advance.
Most of the gang were caught within months. Most of the money was never recovered.
Why it's remembered
Because it was audacious enough to be almost fictional, and because it exposed something uncomfortable: a security system can be excellent and still fail, if everyone assumed the threat would arrive by road.
